The History of the Bodhi Tree

The Bodhi Tree is a fig tree (Ficus religiosa) native to India. According to Buddhist tradition, it was under this tree that Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, attained enlightenment over 2,500 years ago. After sitting in meditation for 49 days, Siddhartha finally achieved a state of perfect understanding and became the Buddha.

The original Bodhi Tree was located in Bodh Gaya, India, but was destroyed several times throughout history. The current tree at the site is said to be a descendant of the original tree, which was grown from a cutting taken from the Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

In the Buddhist tradition, the Bodhi Tree is also associated with the concept of impermanence. Just as the leaves of the tree fall and are replaced with new growth, so too do all things in life come and go.
