Areca palms are very famous and widely grown as houseplants in North America. In some places, the Areca palm is renowned as Cane type palm because of its cane shape stems in mature. Areca palm same to the feather types (especially the Kentia palm) that have the same characteristics as leaves and grow up to about the same height inside the house. Popular names in English for areca palm are - Areca nut palm, betel nut palm, Betel palm, Indian nut, Pinang palm, and catechu.

History / इतिहास
Areca Palm/ Catechu is a variety of palm which grows in the tropical Pacific, East Africa, Asia mainly in tropical weather. It is believed that the origin of Areca palm was in the Philippines, but is widespread in cultivation and is considered naturalized in southern Asian countries - India, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, China (Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan), Taiwan, New Guinea, many of the islands in the Pacific Ocean, and in West Indies.

Areca Palm filters the air nearby and also adds moisture to the surroundings by absorbing all the contagions and toxins, and purifies the air. Areca Palm is known as a natural or god-gifted cooling machine or cooler that can exclude xylene and toluene from the environment.

Areca palm provides clean air to breathe in surroundings by absorbing toluene and other gases, thus helps in enhancing the nervous system in children and stops necrosis that is the unexpected loss of cells and other tissue of the body.

While planting areca palm, pick a pot with drainage holes, and use well-draining potting soil, as areca palm does not like to remain in wet soil as it may spoil the roots. Areca palms like light, indirect daylight, so place your plant in the direction near to south or west-facing window. Direct sunlight will damage and burn the leaves. Since areca palms are native tropical plants, they don’t respond well to cold temperatures. Indoors or outdoors, the Areca plant grows best in normal temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. It will grow well planted in garden areas but if you are planning to plant in the indoor plant, keep the Areca plant leaves away from cold areas like windows, air conditioners, and heat sources.

Yellowing leaves
Yellow leaves are the common problem Areca Palm has to deal with; it indicates that the plant is not getting enough water. For this give your plant regular watering and the plant should overcome very quickly.

- In households, areca palms can grow to be 9 to 10 feet in height. When planted outside, they can stand 15 to 20 feet tall.
